Novice Regatta Feb. 13, 2010 Event Info
Regatta

The Novice Regatta at Turkey Lake Park in Orlando kicks off the Sprints season and is usually the first event for new parents. Here is a quick primer on what to expect.

Directions to the Crowne Plaza – Orlando Universal.

Directions from Crowne Plaza to Turkey Lake.

Please be advised that coach Dawn has requested to Belen’s administration to permit all Novice rowers to be dismissed from school at 10:00 a.m.. on Friday February 12th.

Coach Dawn highly recommends that all athletes report to practice at 4:00 p.m. at Bill Frederick Park At Turkey Lake Park since most of the boys will be rowing in this course for the first time.

Crew members whose parents cannot leave early are encouraged to find transportation with other teammates.

The novice squad is made up of all first-year rowers including freshmen. Novice teams race other novice boats, so that all first-year rowers compete against each other. Each race takes between six minutes, 30 seconds and eight minutes depending on boat class as well as wind and water conditions.

 HEAD OF THE HOOCH
Regatta

Belen rowers competing in the Head of the Hooch, the largest head race in the southeastern US, didn't return to Miami empty handed. The Wolverine Crew's Lightweight 8+ finished third. Their bronze medal was the first won at the Hooch by Belen rowers. "There was good competition in that category with thirteen entries including a number of crews racing lineups that took full advantage of the Hooch's heavier 165 lb weight restriction compared to the Scholastic Rowing Association of America's maximum weight of 150lbs. that all of our rowers met. We had two entries in that race, one finished third and the other fifth. All our boys rowed well and with that trip behind us it is time to get ready for the spring sprint season" remarked Head Coach Dawn Scott Viyella. Congratulations to bronze medalists Mario Egües, Adrian Gonzalez, Ricky Nuñez, Rafael Andres Restrepo, Joseph Santos, Juan Avila, Fernando Ruiz, Alexander Jasman and Diego Juncadella.

You will need to complete TWO different waivers as the Head of the Charles and the Hooch require a different waiver than the rest of the regattas.
